We've been waiting
watching
for your return.
The two of you who nest here.
Listening for that distinct call
watching for your
shore-bird body
long legs
running
across the parking lot
watching for any slight depression
in the rocks
sign of a possible nest
hoping to see eggs before
you two take turns incubating.
We saw one egg last week
two eggs Friday
just one egg today
and one bird
now we're watching
with hope
watching to see
if there are still two birds
and more eggs to come

The joys of nature and the patience required to watch and wait.
Your poetry is always such a delight to read! I love the image of the bird (killdeer???) running across the parking lot and the glimpse you give us of what’s going on with the nest–the spacing of those lines–one egg…two eggs….one egg is really fun–the way they shift back and forth. I hope they are all safe!!
Thanks so much. It is a killdeer. Unfortunately, one egg is missing. The internet says they lose 50% to predators. I just hope they will return and sit on the nest until this egg hatches.
