Having the courage of your convictions

When I came across this quote in Alfie Kohn’s book, Beyond Discipline:  From Compliance to Community, I was struck by the discrepancy between some of the goals of education and the means that we sometimes use to attempt to attain them.  In this instance, our goal is to develop our students into responsible active citizens.  However, if we use punishment and/or rewards in an attempt to control student behavior throughout students’ school careers, we may end up “standardizing” them into compliance, but we may also “standardize” them out of any desire to be responsible socially-minded citizens.
