In my quest to try to incorporate more professional reading this year, I’m in the middle of reading/skimming the National Academies Press document entitled Developing Assessments for the Next Generation Science Standards.
The new science standards require new teaching methods and new methods of assessment. Just what those methods of assessment will look like on the state and national level are unclear. This document gives an overview of the kinds of assessments that will be required to truly measure the impact of the new standards. Chapter 4 (where I’m currently reading) deals specifically with classroom assessment. The entire pre-publication draft can be downloaded as a pdf or read online at the National Academies website (http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=18409). While it may not necessarily have been written for an audience of teachers, it is certainly worth perusing as we make this shift to the NGSS.
